The Food and Drug Administration has been swarmed by questions from millions of Americans about the effectiveness of some medicines use to treat osteoporosis. They claim that Fosamax and other bisphosphonate drugs cause atypical femur fractures.
The federal government health statistics said that nearly 10 million Americans have been suffering with osteoporosis and 34 million are said to have low bone density, making them prone to acquire osteoporosis. It is better for Americans to act now, change their lifestyle and choices of food before the year 2020, as it may lead half of them especially those aging 50 and up to have frail bones, according to studies.
When you take a drug, it is expected that it will help you ease the pain or save you from further complications, yet those who are taking Fosamax, experienced the opposite, instead it gave them adverse side effects.Complications arising from weak bones usually require additional medical care. For example, some Fosamax patients may develop osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ), an uncommon condition also known as jaw death. What happens is that the tissues surrounding the jawbone collapse, consequently exposing the bone, triggering the occurrence of infections, gum lesions, and loosened teeth.
Fosamax users who have dental operation are usually affected by this. In 1995, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Fosamax, a bisphosphonate drug, to treat an ailment known as osteoporosis. The drug works by strengthening bones and stopping breakage.
Several lawsuits have been filed against Merck & Co., the drug company of Fosamax. Two women linked Fosamax to cause ONJ or dead jaw after they suffered from it upon taking Fosamax. In defense, Merck said that those who complained about developing ONJ was already having some medical ailments before Fosamax usage, and that Fosamax was not accountable for it.
Also, in addition to the claims made by the two women, several other users of Fosamax have presented allegations that it causes atypical femur fractures. It does not need any rigorous activities for femur fractures to occur, even with just walking or jogging, it can happen.
There are two separate multidistrict litigation trials for Fosamax lawsuits. All litigations of femur fractures are done in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey and those of osteonecrosis are merged in the U.S. District Court for the Southern Court for the Southern District of New York.U.S. District Judge John Keenan ordered three Fosamax bellwether trials to occur this year, one in May, September, and November. Each Fosamax lawsuit against Merck charges that the pharmaceutical company failed to properly issue appropriate warnings regarding the risk for femur fracture injuries.
